Research Project

In this post-pandemic era, we shift our focus on how to rapidly respond to the medical emergency when an epidemic occurs to a longer revolution of space from realizing the need of redefining the sharing and privacy of space. X-Sphere establishes a new possibility of building development for dismissive of social distance. A series of spere module is conceived as part of the urban integration and the abstract of micro-environment. These various environmental traits are depicted and inhabited into the spherical space.

X-Sphere proposes an architecture system that allow residents to move their living units up and down to accommodate their needs for vertical transportation. In the X-Sphere system, core structure is occupied with public space and in exchange the vertical circulation is unpacked and relocate on the exterior side of the building. The living units are pre-fabricated modules that can be arranged and combined into different sets and populate for more families.

We expect that the people living in the X-Sphere are connected to the community with less concerns of the quarantine situation. Everyone’s life is like a small island in the universe, and when the islands are connected, an oasis of life appears. In the post-epidemic era, we believe what people need more is the heart of caring for each other. Even though the contact in the physical space is restricted, but safe interaction in the building space is protected and encouraged. In this skyscraper, various typologies are combined into the aggregated sphere units, where it is sanitized and well protected. People can enjoy the various immersive scenes while it is hard to travel out of the city.

We hope that X-Sphere can be a prototype of living system for citizens to live safely facing the post pandemic situation. It also brings a new possible tower typology with mechanical feature that can free up the cert core space for public activities and let the vertical circulation to be part of the private units. This kind of reverse private/public inside out spatial relationship improves the flexibility of space layout.
